Rotary die cutting is one of the most efficient ways to cut, crease, and shape material at high speed, which is why it sits at the heart of so many converting operations. If you run labels, tapes, gaskets, medical components, or folding cartons, chances are a rotary process is doing the work. Here is a clear look at what it is and how the pieces fit together.
The Basics
In rotary die cutting, your material (the substrate) feeds continuously through a press between a cylindrical die and an anvil. As the die turns, its raised cutting edges press the substrate against the anvil to cut the shape you need. Because the die rotates rather than stamping down and lifting back up, the process runs continuously at high speed, which makes it well suited to long runs and tight deadlines.
The result can be a through cut, where the material is cut all the way through, or a kiss cut, where only the top layer is cut while the liner stays intact. Kiss cutting is what lets a label peel cleanly off its backing.
The Tooling That Makes It Work
A rotary setup comes down to a few key components. The die itself carries the cutting edges. Wilson builds these as machine sharpened solid rotary dies for demanding, high-volume work, and as flexible dies that mount to a magnetic cylinder for greater value and quick changeovers.
The anvil roll sits opposite the die and gives the cutting edges a hardened surface to press against. Anvil condition has a direct effect on cut quality and die life. For flexible work, a magnetic cylinder holds the flexible die in place and sets the cutting height, so the cylinder and die work as a matched pair.
