Rotary and flatbed die cutting can both produce excellent parts, but they are built for different kinds of work. Choosing the right one comes down to your run length, your material, and the tolerances your job demands. Here is how they compare.

How Each Process Works

In rotary die cutting, the substrate feeds continuously between a rotating cylindrical die and an anvil roll. The die never stops turning, so material moves through the press quickly and without interruption.

In flatbed die cutting, a flat die presses straight down onto the material, cuts, and lifts back up before the next sheet or section advances. It is a stamping motion rather than a continuous roll.

Where Rotary Wins

Rotary is the faster process by a wide margin, which makes it the clear choice for long production runs. Once the tooling is dialed in, it delivers highly repeatable cuts at speed with minimal waste. It also pairs well with in-line operations like printing and laminating, so you can cut as part of a continuous web. For converters running labels, tapes, and similar high-volume work, rotary usually pays for itself in throughput.

Where Flatbed Fits

Flatbed comes into its own on shorter runs and on thicker or more rigid materials that are hard to feed through a rotary press. Because flatbed tooling is often less expensive up front than a matched rotary die and cylinder, it can be the more economical choice when volumes are low or a job is a one-off. The trade-off is speed: the start-stop motion cannot match a continuous rotary web.

A Simple Way to Decide

As a rule of thumb, the higher your volume and the thinner your material, the more rotary makes sense. The shorter your run and the thicker or more rigid your stock, the more flatbed is worth a look. Tolerance, substrate, and how the cut fits into the rest of your line all factor in too.
